Now into updates :

As you all know pankhudi is now registered society operating in 8 cities. Chennai team is still to touch skies. But i am sure we can .. Veena and Nayeem will lead the team. We all are same ..only that they have additional responsibilities like writing reports etc . ;) when we are with children we all are same.

Next Saturday (11th November) we can have a meeting. Saturday by 5 o clock evening would be fine. Please respond the place which will be comfortable for you. Some common places

1) Gundy park
2) Besant nagar beach

Here we can talk or even shout.. Please suggest some more places if u know ..

Meanwhile also do this ..

Find out the possible orpahanges we can visit during weekends. Please consider the facts -
– > The area must be accessible easily since we all are from different area
– > The caretakers of orphanage must be enthusiastic to encourage our aactivites .

Also we need to come up with the activites we can do in the orphanges. We can go just teach the normal lessons to the kids. That can be for the starting stage. But with the wide knowledge and network of ours we can do much more. Please come up with ideas for this.

The final thing is we need to have more volunteers. But with i am sure 15 is a good strength to start with. As soon as we start projects we can add in more people.

If you are in orkut please join the pankhudi community and also add me as ur friend so that it would be easy for me to send updates (divya.senthu@gmail.com)

I have also cc’ed our pankhudi president shahzad. please contact him if you have any specific questions.

Even if you cant participate obn saturday please respond. Before we actually meet atleast we can have a roguh discussion and can finalize on saturday. By we i mean all of us. But unlucikly now i am not in chennai so i would not be able to atten the meeting. But my support will be there always offline till december.

Please participate actively.

Cheers and hopes,

Great Great Experience on August 15th

August 17, 2006 in Uncategorized by divya

Hi,
Caution: This is not a forward. Please bear with the length of the mail. Read when u r free. And share ur views and experiences too J
I am just sharing my experience with u here… My special thanks to Sneham without which I couldn’t have identified the home at all J please read on…
I thought of starting my experience like “The Day started with…” but for me the day didn’t start at all. It continued from the previous night. I didn’t suffer from Insomnia still I was still awake at 12 o clocks midnight, doing my final round of packing and planning. Going through the volunteer list again and again I had a sense of fear how is this event going to be successful. Many of the volunteers who promised to come had some higher priority work and couldn’t participate in the event. But I would say the hope remained plenty. The efforts would be paid well.
After preparing some charts for the event, excitement didn’t let me work further. I packed up everything and lay in bed. Do you think I will get sleep.. Naa.. Now insomnia peeped into my night. Without knowing what to do I logged in into net at 1 o clock. I could see few of my friends online :D , I was explaining my plans of action and asked their opinion. Their feedback was good and all were wishing Happy Independence Day. Saturated with the internet I logged off at 1.45 and back to pavilion.
I lay in bed and went through the sequence of events happened in past few weeks.
With all teams of Pankhudi planning for some events on August 15th, Chennai team still had a poor volunteer base and no proper field identified. We tried for some slum projects and it turned out in a way that we can’t organize any event so soon. Spirits alighted I was waiting for a situation to catch on. As you all know I am also a member of Sneham, a NGO within Infosys. We got an invite from a home called “New Life” for flag hoisting. Seeing this request I thought why not Pankhudi organize an event for the kids there.
Why to procrastinate. I immediately mailed Srikanth, from Sneham. He gave me contact number of lalitha madam who was the care taker there. I spoke with her. I swear I didn’t have any plans. But a story writer inside me awoke at that very moment and gave her a snapshot of what we are going to do. She was happy and welcomed us.
Home fixed. Organizer fixed. What about volunteers? I had only Veena from IFMR. It is ok. I composed one request mail and mailed to my entire friend network. I would it was contribution from each and every friend to forward this mail to their network. At last we got a fair volunteer base of around 30 people. The more happy news was that many people wanted to contribute to this event. Since Pankhudi didn’t have a separate account.
Volunteers fixed. Funds rose. Now activities – I thought of three events.
Competitions – Input from them.
Show from our side – Input to them
Games/Entertainment – Enjoyment
It was a big event for me. It was a great boon for my confidence. I had no volunteer base. Now I am so confident that the event would be successful.
As I communicated this schedule more people joined. It was a good thing. Saturday, I, Veena, Nayeem visited the orphanage. It was a wonderful visit and everything fell into place. I also had a small volunteers meeting to explain the plans. The sail was safe and the captain is happy.
On 14th august a day before the event, many of the volunteers withdrew their presence due to some higher priority work. But it was fine. We had many more to compensate. Did final shopping and came home. Planned for games. Travel arrangements for people coming from IFMR fixed. Tried maximum to avoid extra cost incurred. Then it became night and now I am lying down.
I didn’t know when I slept along with my thoughts. Morning started fine and fresh. Got ready reached the bus stand by auto itself. Mahesh was waiting. Soon all other people came. And the strength of people came was comfortable. We were 13 in number. It includes,
·         Divya,
·         Saroja Aunty,
·         Mahesh
·         Vinoth,
·         Vivek,
·         Vijaykumar,
·         Rija,
·         Praveena,
·         Meena,
·         Shafi,
·         Kanimozhi,
·         Sadana
The bus was delayed for half hour and was fully packed when reaching the depo itself. No one managed to get a seat. In bus itself I explained the plans for the day to a little extent. Then we reached the New Life Home. We requested the bus driver to stop in the entrance of New Life home itself.
We were welcomed warmly by the Orphanage people. The volunteers were from different source. So we had introductions within ourselves. Then we split up the books (gifts) into primary and secondary. We went for breakfast. By that time the other set of volunteers from IFMR(Institute for Finance and Management Research – MBA students) came to the orphanage led by Veena and Nayeem (Pankhudi Co-coordinators).
After a short while, we were briefed about how New Life started and how we can help them through networking and other things. Doz, One of the trustee of New Life said that it was a true motivation from this “New Life”, which supported him to pursue his MCA. He is now working for Covansys and spends most of his weekends in New Life home apart from his own family.
Then the team was split. The entire team volunteers were split into 10 teams, each having one north Indian (MBA stud) and one Tamil volunteer. This would give them maximum interaction and get to know new friends.
After taking a visit to the dormitory where the elders stay and decoration of the stage, we took a stroll to the nearby Panchayat School. There were elders of the village, the headmaster, the chief guest (from NGO – Helpline I guess) and the village people whose children studied in the school. Some were peeping through the wall to look the dance show. When we entered the school there was dance show going and we really enjoyed. Also one welcoming thing was that, the chief guest who came from helpline got amazed by the talents of the kids there and promised to gift (books) to all the kids who participated in cultural. He also gave spot prizes for few kids.
We didn’t expect the headmaster would greet us on the stage and called me to give small talk (?? Why me??). I went and talked a few words. As expected there were lot of giggles when I started talking. The other day when we visited the school for initial planning there kids surrounded us and kept me a name too: Priya.. I just recollected it and asked the kids to participate in the event. Everyone nodded and there were around 250 children that time.
From school we planned to take the children directly to school. But came to know the kids didn’t have their breakfast. So sent them to their home and requested them to assemble back with color dresses. This was for the children in village. The orphanage children were with us. And we moved the orphanage. As planned we had to split up the kids into ten teams. And the volunteers have already been split into 10.
An important strategy has to be taken here. The teams should have mix of children in all age. So we asked them to stand class wise and then we formed a huge circle. A common approach would be to ask the children say 1 to 10 continuously and then ask each to separate. But since the circle was huge (100 children) the volunteers have to pick the children for their team. So what we did is that one volunteer from each team should stand in the middle of the circle. And another volunteer2 should come near the children. Now instead of the children counting 1 to 10, I will say this kid is 1, and then team 1 volunteer will come and take him to his team. After putting the kid to his team he will come back again to carry the next kid. It was really funny. All volunteers acted as if they kidnap the kids to the team.
Then each team volunteers took kids to a comfortable place and asked them to start drawing. The materials for drawing and essay writing were already distributed to the respective teams. Then the drawing competition began. There were also employees from Hyundai Company, who donated food for the day. They were very much interested and were visiting each team taking pictures and all. One kid has to be mentioned here. He has the extreme talent of drawing so naturally and beautifully. He also brought his previous works which really amazed us. And the other part of him is, he is deaf and dumb. In a village which is located 5 kms from main road with bus facility once in 3 hrs we found a genuine diamond. The team will decide on how to expose his talent and shape him better.
Then the kids have completed their drawings. Due to lack of time, we chucked the essay competition. Then the kids were having lunch. Our magician also reached the venue by the time and was having lunch with them.
Meantime a team led by Sanitha, started evaluating the drawing. But the kids from village were already there and someone have to engage. All were busy with some work… So as usual Divya got into the form. Now from coordinator I took a new face of kid and started playing with them. We sang songs, “Intha petti teriyuma”, “ muttai kulla irukaiyile” and “oru viral aadiyathaam”. The children also taught us the song. The funnier part was the north Indians also tried to sing the song. J … And we really enjoyed. In a short while Magic show started….
The magic show, was the highlight of the entire day. Magician Sethuraman ( A TNSF volunteer) enthralled the kids with his sense of humor and magic. The people who came to the orphanage for donating food and many others also enjoyed the show. When they left they expressed their appreciation for our Pankhudi team for their enterprising performance. :D .. Sethuraman, conveyed lot of messages to the kids like “don’t believe in people cheating” ( Ethuvum manthiram illa ellame tanthiram thaan” – there is nothing like magic.. only logic.  wah wat a translation J ) ..
Then after the magic show was over, the kids were again back to ground for playing. The same team as that for the drawing competition was there. The game now to be played was scenario acting. Each team will enact a scenario .. not a skit.. in the sense they must stand still but in different action as to depict a particular scenario. Choosing the situation is the be decided by the team itself. This was very very interesting and this brought up the souls of many…

  • As soon as the topic given one team completed setting up in 2 mins. The scene depicted was a cricket ground. One kid with a bowling action, fielding, etc etc. They were so quick ..
  • Another team depicted a hospital scenario – two bent down and one kid over them to simulate a bed and patient..
  • Another team of military force shooting Mahesh ( a terrorist)
  • A school assembly – a marchpast
  • The team that won the prize was this team – In this team each kid was in his own action. There was no similarity between any one. One singing posing like a singer, one like a politician, one like a dog.. a mixture of everything. We took 5 mins to bring some commonality. But didn’t work out. Atlast we lost and the kids revealed that they enacted a mental hospital .. :D .. great creativity
  • This was the final one in pack.. Two kids raised hands to show like entrance of a home. One big girl holding hands of a small kid. Was it a school where mother leaving kid to the school. No. It is from an orphanage; a mom is adopting a kid and taking to her home. Wow.. No more words..

After that we played some more games and back to stage. The dance show started. Please see the album to see a kid in the stage performing the dance. He is just amazing. If you are a tamilian u cannot say I didn’t see “ Vaalameenukum vilangu meenukum” song. He danced for that song. Almost for 3 times he danced for the song again and again. And the fun started when another girl kid also joined him (she couldn’t resist dancing) .. then we had group dance from senior girls there. Then another dance from “Imsai Arasan” – “aadi vaa paadi vaa” – No words to tell. A boy kid danced like a girl and there was no limits for the enjoyment.
Then from our volunteer’s side, Vijay and Rija danced. They danced instantaneously without any preparations. Vinoth kept changing the songs and they adapted promptly and danced. It was a wonderful show too. Then finally we had prize distributions. All books were given to children who drew well. The care takers distributed the prizes. Who else have more care to the children more than them? Every time when we gave prizes, sir, looked the chart they drew, and showed his appreciation to each kid. The kids’ enacted mental scenario also got prize. One kid got a special prize for his amazing drawing. It was really amazing and wonderful. The sad part is he is deaf and dumb. But that was not a limitation to show his talent. Let us find out a way to showcase his talent
Finally the caretaker gave a small talk to thank the entire team. She also told that pankhudi is now their team. And they want many more functions like this and got promise from us. Finally we bid bye to the children.
Fine.. Now when can an event be successful? When its objectives are met… We planned for many more games and essay competition. I also thought we all will dance together. Many didn’t happen. And there was no “Respected Sir, Dear children, friends “ kind of speech. Everything was informal. We could see kids mingling with our volunteers having lunch with them, sitting along with them for magic show. There was an absolutely 100 percent achievement in this. We wanted to show them that we care and it has proved in this event all the way.. It was a perfect teamwork with each one contributing in their own way. There was 14 north Indians with absolutely no idea on what people talk. Still they conveyed one special feeling  - “We care”
Finally when we left, I saw two kids weaving their hands carrying two pots in their head.. I felt the pain in their hands but hope in their eyes. The final satisfaction came up that very moment with all the efforts made along the past few weeks…
Three cheers,
Divya.S

@Detailed Plans for August 15

August 9, 2006 in Uncategorized by divya

Hi Dears,

It is really lovely to see you all.

And in two days we were able to gear up 16 volunteers.

My sincere and heartfelt thanks to you.

I am briefing out the plans in my mind.

Anything and everything is flexible, so please come up with ideas.

Something managerial:

I have talked with the Caretaker. She has absolutely no issues for us to conduct the event.

She also assured to arrange lunch for us on that day. J (hmmmm yummy)

Also they have mike sets of their own so no issues on that too.

Route and exact address is pending – I will let u know soon about this. Also we will assemble near tambaram and go together.

Something Eventful:

Based on my prior experience in another event, I think we can go ahead and do like this.

There will be teams of three people each. If there are 21 volunteers then we will be having 7 teams like that.

Based on that we will split up the volunteers. Also based on the number of teams the children will be split up. If there are 210 children and we are 7 teams then we will have 30 children per team.

So these 3 people will be in touch with the children belonging to their children.

They will collect the list of children in their team

Volunteer 1 (Prior Responsibility) – who is willing to participate in what competition – prepare and give a list.

Volunteer 2 (Prior responsibility) – basically bring the children in queue or something and help them when the skit is going on. “Be with the children” always…

Volunteer 3 (Prior Responsibility) – If any child is willing to give any variety entertainment. Get information about it and also make necessary arrangements.

Total responsibility of the team – To conduct a game.

Each team will have a different set of game. The children falling into the group will also be random.

Something financial:

This is the thing which really surprised me. By law of natural expenses whenever you plan the budget it is always likely to overflow. But the initial budget itself seems to be amazing. Read on…

~Pankhudi:

  • Pankhudi is an organization working for under-privileged children of our country.
  • It is currently functioning in 8 different cities.
  • Our primary goal is to work for slum children in the perspective of Primary Education and Health. We also focus on Children with special needs to provide emotional support.
  • Chennai team has worked on a project in Saidapet till now and now decided to set wings for the Orphanages too.

August 15th Celebration:

  • On August 15th an orphanage located in Eraiyoor Village, “New Life” is hoisting flag on the occasion of Independence Day.
  • Chennai team got in touch with the care-taker and asked if we have any events as a part of Pankhudi for the children there.
  • Similar kinds of activities have been planned in other cities too.
  • The best thing is that, the caretaker, Lalitha has assured us that she will also invite the children in the slum around there so that they also get entertained on that day.
  • Currently there are 52 children + 45 Old aged Elders. The children in the village are expected to be 100 – 200 based on their availability.

Activities planned:

Considering the children to be in age group 6- 16, we can divide them into two categories – Below 12 years and above 12 years.

Activities planned.

Event 1:

  • Some competitions can be held.
  • Since it is on Independence Day we can have something related to independence.
  • Competitions thought as of now:

Ø      Essay writing (Level 1 and 2)
Ø      Painting / Drawing (Level 1 and 2)
Ø      Speech competition (Level 2)
Ø      Fancy Dress( Level 1 – If possible)

Event 2:

  • General information about Independence
  • (If we don’t have budget we can try to screen a movie for them. Till now no idea of how to arrange for a projector)
  • Else we can come up with a simple script and enact a play and entertain the children.

Event 3:

  • Fun activities.  There will be two sets of events.
  • First dividing the children into group of 10 – 15 (will depend on volunteer base we can mobilize)
  • For each group different kind of games can be kept. Like stamping balloons, bun eating competition etc.
  • The second fun activity will be variety entertainment both from our side and from children side.

Help needed from your side. First and foremost request you to be with us for the event.

Team 1 : (For Event 1)

  • Come up with some ideas on competitions and topics given to the children.
  • Arrange for some judges for each event. (Even you can be a judge)

Team 2 : (For Event 2)

  • Arrange for a projector / nice freedom struggle movies which is understandable by the children
  • Join the skit team and come up with a good script and enact for the children.

Team 3 : (For Event 3)

  • Come up with some games for the children. Also help in coordinating it.
  • If you have a special talent (like playing instruments, singing or anything for that matter) you can entertain the children.
  • Remember no one is going to judge you. Only the kids who are going to get entertained.
  • It is my sincere request. I don’t think there are not much things happening to entertain the kids. You may have a very good singing talent.
  • If you have any friends or celebrities ( J ) you can very well ask them to give the kids some entertainment too.

 Team 4 : Monetary Support:

  • For the kids who win the competitions we are planning to give some books as gifts.
  • Next we need to get respective items (eg. Balloon, Bun ) for the games (suppose the children count is 300 – we need to take that into account too)
  • If we are to screen movie and if we don’t have any ways for projector we need to take it for rent.
  • Also if there are not provisions for Mic and Speakers, we need to arrange for it.
  • So if you are not able to come for the event at least help in contributing a little from your side, to make the children happy.
  • If needed you can directly buy the items you wish to and get me. Contributions need not necessarily be money alone. Something from your end would do.

The more the merry.. So expecting you to be along with us to join hands for this event.

We are still in ground. We have asked time to Caretaker till Wednesday evening (9th August) to confirm on the events and plans for August 15th. So please reply immediately so that we can come up with perfect plans.

I know one week time is little less for a big event like this. But I hope with the help from your side it is going to be a hit. Be there to cheer the children.

All this is purely a voluntary action. So there is no one to give Travel Allowances, or any other funds to volunteers or judges ( J ).. just an information incase.. We can only assure unlimited happiness with kids…

@Latest Updates – 07Aug2006

August 7, 2006 in Uncategorized by divya

Chennai team is now having news to tell you..
With the knowledge gained from the project undertaken in the saidapet slum, Pankhudi team is now trying to start another activity in a new slum. The current activity is now taken care of another team led by thaigu and gopal.
Saturday, Me and Veena( another member) met in Nungambakam. We were also accompanied by Naheem who is also a Pankhudi Member. We were discussing on the activities to be carried out further. Till now pankhudi chennai chapeter has not visited or serviced any Orphanage. So we were figuring out any orphanages near by. Veena took up the task to find details soon.
From there we went to mambalam to meet two volunteers of Diya. Diya is also an organisation of youth who want to contribute to the society. But they dont have any particular targets. They have many projects one of that is the Mambalam Slum project.
We meet Sriram and Sriniwas from Diya Organisation. First we introduced about Pankhudi and our goals to them.. They were pretty happy.
I am first saying the advantages of taking up a project in the slum..
There is already a volunteer group called Ilankuyil in that Slum. So we can very well move with them and interact with the people there so we can have a credibility.
There are two volunteers who are already taking tuitions in the weekdays and saturdays if needed.
Diya(ooh I type Divya everytime :) ) has already taken up initiative to start a library there and also started collecting books for it.
there are lot of volunteers from Diya with bubbling ideas for the children. But they havent thought of any sort related to extra-curricular activities ( education beyond books)
Now comes the disadvantages (A perfect marketing strategy)
The slum isnt a perfect slum but a slum clearance board. It is a group of building where there are lots of people ranging from buisness man to poor rickshaw driver. you cant expect a thatched huts or dressless children there ( words stoled from Sriniwas)..
We cannot meet the kids directly. Only when the young group be there we can interact. That too only when the tuitions are taking place..
So this limits us to visit the slum only during weekdays ( possible only after night 10 o clock) or during saturdays 6 o clock (again based on the avaialability of volunteer there)
There are many initiatives already taken up by Diya.. Only if we are willing they are going to handover children related part to us.. if not anyway they will take some initiatives on that regard…
——– so i welcome all the team members (chennai and outside) to give some suggestion if we can go ahead and take this project or not…
Now another good news…
As few know i am also part of my office Social Service team where there will be requests for monetary help. Today we got an invite from an orpahange(New Life Home) where they wanted us to be there for Flag Hoisting on August 15th. Ha ha .. Halwa for us… I called up that caretaker and told a little about our team.. She was very much welcoming our team. I also suggested her if we can have some special activities on August 15th as a part of Pankhudi initiative.
there are 45 Old people and 52 children in the orphange. They have a auditorium where children can come watch or perform some programs.
I talked about the activities going on other teams and also my wish to start up a new project in a slum. She also said that the orphange is located a very poor slum so that we can do activities there…
ha .. for commutation the orpahage itself sends us a van and pick us from bus stop… good news…
and the best news comes here…
after talking to her for about 15 mins she was really moved and said that for the August 15 event she will call all the children in and around the village ( around 200 too ) to entertain them too in the activities we are planning to conduct…
yippie… it was really sweet of her to accept that request.. now it is a double treat.. we gonna conduct actvities for both orphan kids/ elders/slum children together….
and a bonus treat .. .they are planning to call Radhika/Sarathukumar ( Famour actress/actor ) in tamil cinema industry for the flag hoisting event… we may get an introduction to them…
except for the 1 hour flag hoisting program on august 15th we have all the remaining time to conduct the activities/ events…
right now my brain is not working since i worked too much for my project.. so i dont have immediate solution on what activities i can conduct there…
please dears… send me some suggestions on what we can do…
Cheers,
Divya.S

18th June

Thanks for Manoj for making a small memorable video. We didnt have any documentation for our work as such till now.

Ok… Ill just give a glimpse of things happended this weekend. As usual we all met at around 2 o clock in Saidapet Teachers college. We started discussing what activities to be carried that day..

We initially had
Arun
Shiva
Divya
Thiagu
Mohana.

Mohana already has some prior experiences on these work so she was explaining few concepts on it..

Then that happened. It was a little pathetic event. I have explained in Detail in my blog – divyakelvizhi.blogspot.com

.. Then
Ramya
Manoj (The king of this community)
Karthik
Balaji

joined us…
after some introduction and other fun we moved into the slum..
Last week we promised the kids to come on saturday 3 o clock. When we entered into the slum all asked “y didnt u come akka.. we were waiting for you” – We apologized a lot. Later we came to know that saturday all the kids wore new dress and waiting for us from 1 o clock in the place where we used to meet and have activites..
So sweet on their part and so bad on our part..

But it was all for a moment they started to come and play with us..
we used to have a scout clap initially … this acts like a signal to other kids that we are starting to play..so the kids will join us…

after that we played few games… and sang few songs… last week we had 100 children and we engaged them for 2 solid hours.. this time many children were missing (all went some placess…) but the enthusiasm remained in all children.. the fact is i was little nervous and kind of depressed of the event mentioned in the Blog.. So it was little unmanageable..

But Ramya and Balaji helped me in organising.. I had to engage the children for sometime .. meanwhile another half of the team was talkin with the volunteers on conducting an event called metric mela next week…

We will be having 10 stalls.. two kids will be responsible for each stall. Each stall will be responsible for a kind of metric. For example in one stall they will be having a cabbage and will enquire about the diameter of the cabbage. this would be interesting things to kids and they can also learn about metrics.. like that children will calculate the length with help of groomstick etc etc.. counting number of individual rice in a bowl etc etc…

So this activity will be carried out next week Sunday and we will have regular visit on Saturday @3

Another good thing happened in this visit is that – the other side of the hand came forward came for a clap… Yes some men in the village came forward to set-up a proper structure for the children to sit and study in the tuition.. This is indeed a remarkable turn out. Thanks to Suresh and Moideen – people in the slum..

They were talking to Karthi and Balaji. They responded properly. Special thanks to them. As usual after we finished our work we all had tea there. it was a compulsion from them. they are happy in having us as their guests and give us tea on their account. Last week they gave us in Plastic cups. we told dont use plastics.. They told “we do have tumblers but dont know if u will drink in our tumblers.” – Go ahead akka.. we are same… So this time we had a much relative kind treatment.. we were all made to sit in a mat .. then all were served tea.. the children didnt have to heart to leave us and go… So there were few kids with us.. :-) we had few dance and songs from the kids.. see it in manojsays.blogspot.com…

All kids got the promise from us that we wont disappoint them next week… we gave all our hands to ensure it.. and then we left out from the slum… there at the end of the slum there was a kid who was playing with us now washing vessels.. she twinkled her eyes and said bye to us.. that will keep us motivated for this full weekend.. lets see what next….

@Our First Slum Visit on 3rd June – 200666

July 28, 2006 in Uncategorized by divya

In the last week meeting we decided to go to Saidapet Slum (Suggested by Hema) @3. Believe man there was vinoth waiting in the stopping @ 2.30 itself. Wah wah what a sincerity. That time only we were starting from home… lolz..Anyway we started the meeting at 3.07 Sharp..

We walked straight to the slum. I initially caught a slight fever.. How will it be..we were with a old bag, all bada bada guys(not all ;-) and with a book.. I don’t know.. I made all attempts to appear casual..

It actually didn’t expect a slum to be like that. There were buildings quite big. There were people who were watching TV’s. I guess I am too spoiled seeing so many movies. We marched towards the street. When the dead end of the street came we need to answer them anyway. Ha my movies power didn’t disappoint me.. as expected there was a tea shop and some people around it. “who are u.. what do u want?” – They asked us.. Then we explained we want a basic data of education profile of the children.

We were actually lucky – the girl/lady with whom we talked was the tuition teacher for the children before 2 years. We got the information that all children there go to school and also go to tuition (Balvadi). We also enquired about the profile of the slum – they pointed us to another slum where the condition is little poorer than them. Two kids were asked to guide us. We followed them. They walked like Army men having president(s) behind them. We tried to ask them their name. They were keen on moving forward.

Then they were interrupted by one guy. He pointed us and asked in his ears “who are they” – we anyway overheard it and waited for what could be his reply. He said “this people have come to take some tuition. So just taking them to kids over there”. God!! We didn’t tell him anything. We didn’t even tell we are here to teach them something. how did he have the assimilation power of observing what we are upto and putting that in the terms of what he understands..

The new kid joined us. Now that we were lead by three children.. we were the sight caught by other children playing around. At one spot we had around 20 children clubbed together and doing different activities – majority were girl children.. honey for us.. we stopped moving further and just told we are gonna play now.. I said ” I wanna play now.. who will add me with u” – guys didn’t bother me at all… girl kids were kind enough to give a warm smile and accepted us… then we started with a song.. a very attractive song about “chicken” – no no not that chicken.. it is a cute song of a chicken singing a song.. the kids sang along with us.. then we played some games.. hema was good in the games too.. me hema and kids played while thiagu, gopal vinoth were enquiring the adult people who came to see what we were doing.. it happened simultaneously.. there was one kid called ” Jothi” she was jumping then and there. Since those kids were not the one we were targeting actually we moved on.. but to the surprise the kids told “Don’t go” – Held by love we played again with them… they taught us another game… this time thiagu gopal also joined us but poor guys they lost the game so soon… then after two begs with the children for the permission to leave we got independent atlast.. but it was touching when “Jothi” bid us bye weeping.. how much time did she know us? 1 hour? But how was it possible for her to bond so soon… Human relations are really amazing… Wondering about this we moved on to the next slum…

There the entire scenario of our visit changed…

Time to go now.. will continue tomorrow.. until that keep guessing what happened.

Cheers,

Divya.S

I am taking the torch of Remembrace with me to search my convolutions to give u the previous week report. Guys please rewind your analyzing power one week back since this is last week report. Kill me for my procrastination. This report was supposed to be completed Tuesday itself.

Ok.. Now to go.. Ill continue from the last report. When we went to the other slum the entire visit took a different meaning.

The new Slum is called as “Thideer Nagar”. Meaning “Sudden” place. My tamil movies didn’t fails to give a correct portray of a Slum (Expecially “AARU”).. It was a pakka slum… After bidding bye to the kids we played we entered another slum. It was a slum with full of huts which extended for about three streets long with quite random pattern of huts. We entered the first slot. There was a house-wife. We started asking the education profile. She told that kids study in schools and study only till 8th standard. We kept asking that house wife if she makes her kids study. Then she called her younger sister who is going to 10th class. She told tat her life ambition is to become a teacher. When we asked how will she manage the finance she was not having answer. Then we gave her many options and said u study u will get scholarship. We realized she is happy when we saw the bloom in her face.

Then we had another curious kids hearing all this. “now what do u want to become sir” – we asked him. He was happy that we posed him the question. He said I want to become big. Someone commented if u eat nicely u can become big. Then he said I want to build big big buildings..”oh you want to build for yourself or for others (in the context as a civil engineer)?” we asked him. He said I will build big big buildings for all my friends and we will stay together… We all smiled at each other and his sense of friendship touched each of us.

Then we moved on to other streets. The education profile seem to be similar. The children study till 8th class. Then when we were crossing “that” only “that” happened. The former “that” is a place where people were pumping the water. It was like a place where the entire drainage water was sinking. There were stones put in between so that people can cross from one end to another end. It made us little worried. We also need to implement hygiene in that place. The latter “that” is that while we were crossing that mini-koovam (courtesy: Chennai Local Language ) there was shanti pumping water. She literally shouted at us. “What are you upto?” – We told that we want to help the children here with education. Then she stopped pumping. “Are you here for taking tuitions??” she asked with curiosity. We told “you need to tell that – we will try to help maximum on it “ – Then she smiled on us. We didn’t find any traces of anger which she had initially. Then she told “we are very much in need of tuition” and kids around were nodding their head. One naughty kid asked “how much are you going to ask us for tuition” – We ensured we are not for money. Peace rested on their eyes.

Now we had more and more kids around us. Some were just nagging us and smiling. Then we moved on. Shanti completed her work and took us to somewhat mid of the slum. There were many people. We had a little long discussion. Their requirements and the past tuition history. There was a tuition master before it seems. After he left there is no one to help the kids.

When we were asking about the place where we can keep the tuition one kid told we are ready to sit even in the “that” place and study. Showed he was too interested for tuition. Then we kept moving. Met some people. Collected some information about people in the village who are educated there. But we were not able to meet anyone. Finally we met two house-wives who were really interested in bringing up the general knowledge and education of the children. Their name is Amul and Devi. (We have big plans for them. More on next week report ) .. Then we decided the head of the Slum ( called as “OOR THALAIVAR”) But he was not available. We returned from the Slum with the promise that we will come the following week.
