Impact & Achievements
Prior to January 2009, our focus was on supplementing the material taught to the children in school. We helped them resolve problems they had with their NCERT curriculum in maths, hindi and english. We found that many kids became more interested in their studies once they had a better understanding of the fundamentals of their subject. They were also eager to learn and would often bring us problems that they had with their school syllabus. Since we have implemented a structured English curriculum designed to teach them the very basics of the English language, there has been considerable improvement in the children's ability to understand what is taught to them. The younger children are able to identify the phonetics behind alphabets and use this knowledge to spell and read short words. They also understand simple questions like 'What is your name' and 'Is that a car' and are able to respond. The older children are able to spell and identify longer words and phrases and are able to respond to questions like 'How many sisters do you have?' 'Are you singing/playing/dancing', 'What is your father's name' etc. We evaluated their progress in English and found that over 70% had improved in English comprehension considerably. Many of the children have expressed greater interest in learning English and all are passing the subject in school. Mathematics has picked up with equal pace and the kids show keen interest in problem solving.
