L&T South City Kids visit to SRMAB

May 18th, 2008 by ramkumarkoppu

Hello All,
This one is long….you can go and get a 2 min walk before u start reading it :) I have been dying to write it this mail from the moment I came back from the school. Cant wait any more…here I go :)

It was 9:15 when we gathered around the basket ball court and we had kids chirruping around and parents eager to know where are we going and whats going to happen there. I being the route leader ( if such a thing exits ! ) I explained to ppl how to reach the place around 10 times…( ppl chose to come one by one may be to help me revise the route properly! ) and we left at around 9:30.
As soon as we reached, catching our breaths and looking around, waiting for Joseph, the kids were already jumping and playing in the small play area with the rides. Finally, we somehow managed to get them together at one place with Joseph introducing himself and talking abt our entry into the school and the introductory session we were about to have. Do u think I am going too slow? please forgive me for this but I enjoyed each and every moment of today’s visit and I want you to enjoy it too!

So now we proceeded towards the examination hall where we were waiting for Laxmi Iyer Sir to give us an introduction. ( Check out the picasa album to get a feel of the cosy setting we had there). Here comes the head of the department “L I ” sir. Yes, L I Sir, thats what kids call him and thats how he loves getting called…a very nice person with lot of enthusiasm, wisdom and patience. He started with an introduction to the school and an introduction to how our visually impaired friends do their studies and make their living. He told us amazing stories of the visually impaired achieving feats in life ! One story was about a 3 yr old kid saving his father’s life and getting a bravery award from the karnataka govt ! We started getting applause after each such story. ( Wait, applause! ) A truly inspiring and encouraging session for the kids as well as the parents.( and for me it was not just a session…it was enlightenment :D )

Joseph couldnt wait any longer to take the kids to a hands on session where they could meet and see visually impaired and become friends with them. We started with the “Resource Room” which had a great many tools and resources to play with. A small 10 min demo of the tools from an expert in the lab is what the kids really enjoyed ( kids being kids…they have to have fun with the tools :) )

Next we went into the computer lab where we had Sheela, Nagaveni and Renuka ( 7th standard girls batch) doing typing practice. What can be more intriguing than seeing the blind using a computer comfortably ( and I would say “grace” , honestly speaking I see more grace in the blind than us! ). Kids were happy and surprised at the same time.

Now this one was a total home run. I dint expect to see a dance performance during the visit. Joseph took us to the dance room where all kids sat sweetly cuddling and looking at the performers. We had two performers, one the dance teacher Mr. Manjappa and another his student Ninesh. Manjappa is a limca world record holder , with a record of being the first blind to perform kuchi pudi and bharatnatyam form of dances!!! They gave us a brief session on how the blind learn and perform such an expressive art. All the parents and the kids were totally mesmerised and amazed with the kind of proficiency with which the Nineesh danced with a pot full of water on his head and a “thaal” ( big plate ) under his feet.

Too long…and no one could wait to see the dairy where the cows are fed and milked by the students. Am really sorry that I forgot to take some photos there but the scene was amusing :D . The cows were having their lunch and “L I ” Sir were telling kids how to touch and feed cows. Just imagine , kids coming one by one and jumping and screaming out of happiness just after touching the cow :D . The scene was worth a watch!

The last but the most important destination was the card-board factory. Here the kids could see how the visually impaired could run a whole factory all by themselves and make a living out that. Even I was surprised to know that all were visually impaired and were working so comfortably around the big machines as if they could see as good as I could. ( Picasa Picasa Picasa)

Today, was an amazing, full of fun and a great learning experience for L & T South City. I wish you ppl could share all the fun with us.

~Pankhudi Bangalore Team Visit to SOS children’s village

May 18th, 2008 by ramkumarkoppu

(Please visit http://www.pankhudifoundation.org/photos/main.php?g2_itemId=11793 for picture gallery)

The Last few days have been quite amusing and eventful, to say the least. So let me share sweet memories of Pankhudi Bangalore team visit to SOS children’s village. For those of you who don’t understand what SOS is, don’t worry…even i dont know what it means..hehehe…just kidding..Guys, please read it carefully and i would appreciate if someone can post your valuable comments right here-right-now :-)

About SOS children’s village:
SOS children’s village is an international NGO working to provide a “home” to destitute and orphaned children. Started by Hermnn Fmeiner, a German in 1964 at Vietnam, SOS seeks to provide long term care to children by creating what we call as a “family feeling”. The Bangalore based SOS village is located at Hulimavu , about 20 km outskirts of Bangalore. It has 16 houses including one each for Muslims and Christians. Currently around 100+ children of different ages belonging to all castes find their homes there.

Event details:
On a saturday(8th of March) afternoon at 2:00 when whole working class genre was in peaceful slumbers after the friday night movie or the weekend party…pankhudi team went to a SOS children village along with Siemens guys…just to have a good time with children…

A 5 member team (Rohit, Varun, Nisha, Sonali, and the youngest one ‘Ritvik’) from Pankhudi joined hands with a bunch of people from Siemens to organize a fun filled afternoon for the Bangalore based SOS Village at Hulimavu.

The Siemens-Pankhudi Joint event started with multiple rounds of the Musical Chair game around 2:30PM amidst live music (read ‘Streets of London’,'Knocking on the Heavens Door’ and some random jingles ) by Asha, the lead guitarist from Siemens.

This was followed by an Arts and crafts game wherein children were divided in 4 groups of 10-11 each and asked to collectively design their “dream house” with the available raw-materials (newspapers , glue-sticks etc ) provided by the volunteers. This game in particular witnessed the sheer brilliance of human creativity when some of the children designed not only the houses but also random things like paper hand-ball , fruit-basket , wall hangings and live gardens.Amidst this , the volunteers asked the children about their aspirations, dreams and desires and tried to guide them whereever appropraite.

The Event wrapped up about 5:30 PM with a couple of out-door games like handball , discus throw and a friendly cricket match between the volunteers and the children wherein the volunteers obviously let the hosts win.The Event in all was a success.

Updates on Pankhudi’s English teaching activities in Govt. School

February 10th, 2008 by Yatin Sethi

Pankhudi Foundation in partnership with Mukta Foundation has been conducting English classes in the above school for 5th, 6th & 7th std students since last two years. Apart from the regular classes, some latest developments are given below:

a) We have recently started to take some guidance from Ms.Subhoda, a teacher herself with over 15 yrs of experience & runs her own school called - Bhandhavya, a intermediate school (for both special & normal kids). She has been advising us various aspects like, how to teach kids using games, music, story telling, handle larger counts of kids, material, tracking etc.

b) Apart from the regular English teaching, we also wanted to improve the standards of the school in terms of their infrastruscture (toilets, drinking water, safety etc). In this regard, we met Mr.Vijay Bhaskar, Principal Secretary for Education in Karnataka, who was very happy with our initiative & assured us his full support.

To conclude, we have completely removed the usage of pen & paper in the classes. We’r trying to make them comfortable in english language by using story-telling techniques, drawing, songs, games, group discussions etc.

Sarkari Hiraya Pathshala:
Location: Near NR Colony, Basavanagudi
Time & day: Every Saturday, 9:00 am to 10:30 am

We are looking out for dedicated volunteers for this activity. Any one interested in volunteering, please call Vivek at 98450 80313.

~Pankhudi volunteers in IBM ODC Initiative

August 10th, 2007 by Mohan

As part of IBM’s On Demand Community initiative, the Gelveles On Demand Community Week was organized from July 27th to August 4th. The plan was to set up team volunteer opportunities in 10 US locations as well as Brazil, Mexico, Australia and India. Teams will be assembled in West Chester County, NY, Atlanta, Lexington, Raleigh, Gaithersburg, Minneapolis, Charlotte, Austin, Southbury, Boca, Bangalore, Hortolandia and Mexico City.

As an IBM ODC Bangalore initiative to support this event, we planned to spend a day with poor students. Inspite of Bangalore being a High-Tech city, yet 70% of the local population is under the darkness and unaware of the technical expansion going on. Hence we IBMer’s took up this oppurtunity to make children/people aware of the scientific evolution and how they could contribute towards the growth of the society.

Volunteers from the various IBM locations all over Bangalore came forward to take up this cause a day-long event full of activities for the children. We divided the bulk of students in 2 groups to facilitate better management, former watching Educational movie while latter group was playing Treasure Hunt/Games. After 2 hours the groups were interchanged and the same schedule followed.

~Pankhudi Bangalore - Seva Day @ Sri Rakum school for the blind on April 1st 2007

April 8th, 2007 by Mohan

On 1st April 2007, the Bangalore chapter of ~Pankhudi Foundation participated in the monthly Seva Day organized by Sri Rakum school for the blind in Indiranagar, Bangalore.

The previous day (March 30), we collected all clothes at Aarti’s place and sorted them out into bags. WE later dropped them off at Sri Rakum school and decided to be a part of the distribution process that would happen on Sunday, April 1st.

Sometime after 9AM, we entered Sri Rakum’ s premises to see a long line already in wait for the goods being donated.

Items like bags, medicines, Braille sets, talking watches, stationery, among others were being distributed.

Food was also distributed to the needy and generally people were happy during this sunny day.

In order to be a volunteer distributing these items away, we should have given our names a day before Seva day happens. Since we didn’t know this, we resorted to observing:

We later spoke to Acharya Rakum and he mentioned a shortage of Braille items and other articles which the visually impaired would find really useful. There is a place in Tamil Nadu where these kind of goods are usually sourced from. The following is the address:

Worth Plastics
48, New Thiruvalam Road,
Katpadi, Vellore-632007
Tamil Nadu
INDIA
Phone: 0416-2243939
2242739
Email: vir_worth@sancharnet.in

Acharya Rakum also gave us a list of items and their cost which gave us an idea of how to start Seva Days of our own, if the time and opportunity arise. This list of items is with me and would be helpful if we need to procure the same whenever required.

~Pankhudi in Sri Ramana Maharshi Academy for the Blind

February 8th, 2007 by Mohan

So far, ~Pankhudi Bangalore has been associated with teaching slum children, collecting clothes, toys, and books for children, and developing supporting teaching material.

Beginning this month, we have embarked on a new initiative through Ganesh, Anusha, and Magesh. Here is what Ganesh had to say about the wonderful news:

“I am very happy to inform you all that we have succesfully set up the foundation for computer education in the Ramana Maharishi School for blind, JP nagar. Last weekend me and anusha started computer classes here. We started with some 4 kids and 1 teacher. They were very happy with the class. Since all of them knew english, language barrier was not a problem :)
They have some 6 properly working systems now. Myself and Magesh have given these computers for service and upgradation yesterday. Now the next target is the kanagpura center which was set up by the same organization. This place not only has blind children, but also children with all sorts of disabilities. It would really be great if we could do the same kind of service at kanagpura also. As a first setp towards this we can go and visit kanagpura. Kanagpura is nearly 30 kms from bangalore. This should be one hour ride. Can we go here this saturday?? We can go in bikes :) Those who are ready please reply back. We can start saturday morning and be back for lunch. It is preferable to go on saturday because, sunday they will not be working. so we will not be able to get a clear picture of what is going on and what are their requirements.”

GREAT GOING, TEAM!!! LET’S KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK :) :) :)

Nagaraj continuing with his studies now

December 14th, 2006 by Yatin Sethi

Nagaraj is a kid of 17 years who always wanted to complete his secondary school (10th class) studies. But due to financial problems in his family, he started working from his childhood as a barber. He currently works at a barber shop in Bangalore everyday from 6 AM - 10 PM.

We helped him in this situation and provided him with textbooks and notebooks for his studies. We also guided him on his career path and motivated him to study further for a better future. Now, he studies a little every night and is getting ready to give his exams in March 2007.

We hope that he would be able to fulfill his dream of getting a better job after studies and help his family in a better way.
